Perfume Buttons of the Victorian Era. In the 1800's, fragrances were mainly oil based, however, Victorian ladies were concerned about these perfumes staining their clothes. The clever solution? Perfume buttons. They had a cloth base like velvet, flannel or cork to absorb and hold scents, and were adorned with metal patterns, often simple shapes, foliage, or floral.

These unique buttons were cherished during the Civil War as sentimental tokens. Some soldiers carried them throughout the war, finding comfort in their presence, particularly because they likely were gifted by their significant other prior to their deployment and still carried the scent of their loved one.

Necklace is adjustable (up to 21 inches) - bronze chain and components. Button is about the size of a penny.
